Local Charity:
Gooch Elementary: Peace Pals & Gooch Garden
Peace Pals Program: The Season for Peace and Nonviolence Group ( http://www.64-days.org/ --is an extension of CSL Dallas ) is passionate about inspiring peace. One of the ways we are doing this is facilitating a conversation among children about peace, violence prevention, and tolerance. We began the Peace Pal program last year, working with the fourth grade in two different Dallas schools (Gooch Elementary being one). The students wrote letters back and forth about their thoughts and experiences practicing peace. At the end of the program they had a party where they were able to talk to their pal and make a peace bracelet for them. The Evaluation forms from teachers included comments like: “I was surprised to see my low performing students so motivated to write and communicate their thoughts.” And from students: “I learned that you can make friends even if you haven’t seen them, it doesn’t matter what they look like.” ,“I learned that peace only leads to more peace.” and “I learned that it is OK to friend anyone in the world!”

This year our plan is to expand the program to about 400 students from 3 schools. We plan to work with the teachers to dovetail with the Teaching Tolerance and Anti bullying programs to help students learn positive behaviors and alternative choices to violence.

Another of our goals this year is to bring the students together at the conclusion of the program. There was a strong desire to meet their pals last year but because of expense and scheduling this could not be accomplished. This is priority. We have a number of volunteers that want to perform at the party including; storytellers, slam poetry, puppeteers to illustrate other expressions of peace.

Our vision of expansion is to have a lasting monument of peace in our community. We hope to have all the students that participate in Peace Pals make a tile of their vision of peace. We would then have a Peace wall constructed to display these visions. And the Gooch Garden Project:
With proper funding, we plan to start by building the Butterfly Garden . This will not only teach the children about the plants but about butterflies, larvae and worms, cocoons and more. Great metaphors also! From there we will begin to put in a fall vegetable/greens garden at the school to begin to feed some of the families from the school who are in need and/or send the vegetables to some local food bank.

We are a team of 14 people from the Center for Spiritual Living in Dallas Texas who believe in growing and eating local food for our own health and the health of the environment. We believe in nurturing ourselves and our Mother Earth. We also believe in teaching these young people the value of working with their hands and allowing them to experience the satisfaction of growing their own food in addition to teaching them about the importance of healthy, quality food. Our first project was to create 2 beds in the courtyard at the school and to plant a tree in honor of one of the young students who was killed. On Saturday, May 7 parents, teachers, students and Dallas County Master Gardeners all worked together to benefit these young people at Gooch Elementary by building 2 4 x 4 raised beds. We are excited about continuing our future plans for Gooch Garden!
