Saturday, 4pm Main Stage Field

Synchronized Link up with
over 150 cities in 50 countries

The highlight of the Earthdance International event is a synchronized dance floor link-up, when the specially created song, "The Prayer for Peace" is played at every event across the world at exactly the same time.  Morning in Australia, sunrise over the Himalayas, midnight in London, afternoon in California - the universal prayer is a powerful moment that unifies our intention for a peaceful world.

"We are one global family
All colors, All races
One world united.
We dance for peace and the healing of our planet Earth
Peace for all nations.
Peace for our communities.
And peace within ourselves.
As we join all dance floors across the world,
let us connect heart to heart.
Through our diversity we recognize Unity.
Through our compassion we recognize Peace.
Our love is the power to transform our world
Let us send it out
NOW..."

The Divine Comedy- hosted by Wavy Gravy
Saturday Night (September 17)
in the Diner Divine

Presenting for the first year at Earthdance - "The Divine Comedy" sessions, hosted by legendary activist clown Wavy Gravy with special guest comics. Join us for belly full of laughs and feast on some delicious diner munchies. This festival gem is not to be missed.

"Like the best of clowns, Wavy Gravy will make as big a fool of himself as is necessary to make a wiser man of you. He is one of the better people on earth."

-- Ron Rosenbaum,
Village Voice

Wavy Gravy has lived a life filled with excitement, adventure, and philanthropy. He was a part of the Beat movement in the late 1950s, hanging out in Greenwich Village with hipsters and folk singers like Paul Krassner, Lenny Bruce, and Bob Dylan. He was a comedian and a comic actor, working for a time at the Committee (San Francisco's equivalent to Chicago's Second City ). By 1966, he was one of Ken Kesey's Merry Pranksters and living on a mountain top commune near L.A. called the Hog Farm. After a time, the Hog Farm took to the road with its members living in a fleet of converted school buses and traveling the country protesting the Vietnam War. Wavy Gravy achieved his first 15 minutes of fame when he declared from the stage at Woodstock, "What we have in mind is breakfast in bed for 400,000."

Wavy has filled his days with an endless list of benefits and worthy causes, including the Seva Foundation, Home Aid (for the homeless), Cowboys for Indians (for Native Americans), Blues Against Blindness and more. He also co-founded the legendary camp Winnarainbow for children with is wife Jahanara and has spent countless hours spent in children's hospital ward. He is addicted to helping people, and his enthusiasm is contagious.

With Special Guest:

SCOTT KALECHSTEIN

Scott is a multi-talented singer/songwriter/comedian who has performed throughout the US, in Europe and internationally. He is perhaps best known for his improvisational abilities to create original songs, on any topic, requested by the audience. Kalechstein is an electrifyingly REAL performer, who does not do well-rehearsed, 'canned' performances, nor does he hide behind a polished facade. Every performance is unique and original, stimulated by audience input and interaction. After a concert one woman said "I have not laughed that much in ten > years!" She was not alone.

Community Spiral Dance
Following the Prayer for Peace global link up...
in the Main Field

Immediately following the Prayer for Peace on Saturday September 17th we will join hands and dance a double spiral dance. This will be the biggest spiral dance ever created and will depend wholly on the participation and cooperation of all involved. The Spiral dance is a very powerful experience that can weave our collective intentions and prayers into one great vision that we then release into the universe on an incredible wave of voices. This kind of focused prayer has been proven to have tremendous potential for positive change and the dance itself is a great opportunity for us to connect as a community - as we join hands in a circle to dance into the center and out again, we pass each person in the dance and begin to see the many powerful beings that are part of this great turning of the wheel of life!

In the natural world, the spiral is seen everywhere: in the unfurling bud of a new rose, the whorled lines of a seashell, even in the great spiral arms of galaxies. The spiral image appears in sacred art of many cultures. The Native American shamanic tradition holds concentric circles to be "passageways between the natural and supernatural world", and mandalas are sacred symbols used for meditation in Eastern religions which often use spiral motifs. In Australian aboriginal paintings, concentric circles are said to show the location of sacred sites. Spiral images appear in the art of the Huichol Indians of Mexico and in many other cultures around the world. Both single and double spirals were among the most sacred signs of Neolithic Europe. They appeared on megalithic monuments and temples all over the continent and the Celtic islands. Spiral oculi (double twists resembling eyes) appear prominently in places like the threshold stones at Newgrange in Ireland.

How it Works:

Firstly, all participants will move to the outer edges of the field. Then two leaders holding tall banners will begin a slow journey into the center creating a line behin them. As participants chant to the heartbeat of the drum, they will join one of the lines. Those who do not wish to dance can move to the center and hold space there. Each procession will move into the center and then begin to weave back out again - passing the line that is still moving inward. As the lines move in and out, the energy builds and when the two lines meet, all participants will raise their voices and release their intentions to the heavens.

Please note: IT IS IMPORTANT THAT THE LINE STAYS TOGETHER! This means that once you have taken hold of the hands of the people next to you, you must not let go! If you need to leave the circle, make sure that you connect the hands of the people on either side of you. We will have helpers there to make sure that the dance moves smoothly but please remember, that every part of the spiral affects every other part and so we must work together to make it work well!

So come join us -together we will dance the spiral - making history, weaving our voices, our hearts and our steps into an intention for peace and awakening - revitalizing ourselves and our community with each step we take! See you in the dance!!! Suzanne

  Earth Mandala
Earthdance Mandala 2004
The creation of a community Earth Mandala has been a tradition at Earthdance since 1999, when the first mandala was created at the Golden Gate Park bandshell. Community participation is what makes this co-creation so precious and so very potent, as people from all walks of life are invited to join in the creative process. Over the years, the mandala has been a wonderful focal point for community sharing and healing and has become a powerful dedication to the sacredness of life.

What is a Mandala?

Derived from the Hindu language, a mandala is a circular design arranged in layers radiating outwards from the center. The mandala has a rich history in many ritual-based traditions. It is found in the Tibetan art, Australian Aboriginal sand paintings, in Hindu cosmology, in ancient Mayan architecture, in Celtic art, and in Native American ritual and art, where earth materials and used for prayer and protection.

Join the co-creation

Earthdance Mandala 2003
Since the Earth Mandala is a community co-creation, we invite you to bring your own gifts and prayers, dreams and blessings, to help create this sacred circle. Your gift can be a pine cone, seeds, rock, crystal, shell, incense, candle, poem, drawing, song, whatever you feel in your heart to give freely for this portal of healing, love, hope and peace. Know that you can either leave your gift, if it is an object, or recover it at the closing of the festival. Your energized gift could then be given to a friend, family member in need or a stranger you meet later on in the day. Seeds could be planted in your garden, scattered off the side of the highway, or used to start your own mandala at home. Just know that it's a gift that keeps on giving and being received.

If you wish to join in the Earth Mandala's creation, we typically gather Friday morning of the festival to lay out everything we have brought. If you wish to participate with the collection of earth elements prior to the festival, please contact me for more details. We could really use gatherers!

A beautiful visual odyssey of dancing jelly ‘fish’ set to opera music sung by the film’s multi-talented director.

Ride of the Mergansers – Director: Steve Furman - 11 min. USA

Peregrine Dreams – Director: Greg Bernstein - 10 min. USA
In 1997 members of Project Bandaloop ascended the massive granite face of El Capitan in Yosemite National Park. Over the course of six days and five nights they created a vertical dance that celebrated the return of the peregrine falcon from near extinction. It also articulates the exceptional nature of the peregrine falcon, the environmental issues that led to its near extinction and the work of the Predatory Bird Research Group of Santa Cruz.

Flip Flotsam – Director: Journeyman Pictures - 20 min. Africa
Ever wondered what happens to your footwear after you’re finished with it? This award-winning and startlingly original documentary traces the fantastic journey of Africa’s most popular shoes: the flip-flop. Easily bought, quickly discarded, the flip-flop stands as a symbol of the summer holiday for millions of westerners. But in its African homeland, it undergoes a series of versatile transformations. Filmed over a two year period, this uplifting film takes an ingenious look at the lifecycle of the flip-flop.

DANCES OF ECSTASY

Friday Night/Saturday Morning
Arlo Forest Stage
3 :00am - 4:30am

Dances of EcstacyDANCES OF ECSTASY is a sensory journey into the mesmerising world of trance and ecstasy that binds dancers from Manhattan to Morocco. Australian filmmakers Michelle Mahrer and Nicole Ma travelled to traditional and modern day rituals to discover what is the altered state experience which people seek through dance. In these rituals, Whirling Dervishes from Turkey, Orisha priestesses from Nigeria and Brazil, and shaman healers from the Kalahari and Korea, pulse to the same beat as thousands of young people at an all night techno dance party in an Australian forest.

DANCES OF ECSTASY is a visual and aural feast for the senses, an innovative documentary blending exciting dance rituals, evocative imagery, interviews and a spellbinding global music soundtrack. The film is an inspiration to dance, and to reconnect with a sense of the sacred that many have lost touch with in modern life.

Astrological Forecast for September 17, 2005

Provided for Earthdance by:

Dusty Park
Founder, Astrology 3D, Inc. www.astrology3d.com

The Astrology of Earthdance for 2005 shows a focus of considerable Harmony, Inspiration and Action with these major energy patterns:

  • The Full Moon in Pisces, the sign of Peace and Music, denotes that the collective awareness is concerned with the oneness of all life and having empathy for all beings.

  • The T-Square made from the Sun & Moon both squaring Pluto, the planet of transformation, indicates that there is the need & will to shift towards the essence or a more pure state of understanding (Pluto in Sagittarius). The opposition of Saturn and Neptune bring the necessity for a more tangible manifestation of the principles of Peace and Oneness. This is expressed in Earthdance by the purpose shared by the "global family " collecting together and sharing in music and art all over the world in acknowledgement of the purpose of Peace.

  • The T-Square of Saturn and Neptune to Venus represents the challenge to live the ideals and the actual commitment and work that must be sustained in order to effect lasting change for Peace. The Trine of Jupiter to Neptune signifies that there is very positive and expanding energy for learning about and teaching the principles of Peace. This can manifest as expanded collective inspiration on a global scale.

  • Finally, the Grand Trine between the Sun/Mercury conjunction and Mars and the Ascendant. This is a symbol of the harmony of cooperative will and action, fluency in communication all focusing on the NOW Moment of the Ascendant in Capricorn, the sign of Purpose and Manifestation. A Grand Trine of essential Harmony of taking action and communicating a Harmony of Will towards this purpose of Peace for which the Prayer for Peace is the collective symbol shared by all the tribes globally in this moment of Intention/Manifestation of seeing, being & revealing the Truth of Oneness.
